Help the Rural Child is a project of the Goedgedacht Foundation. They have a great second hand bookstore with some lovely kids’ books. My daughter Sophie is an avid reader, and despite frequent library trips, I struggle to keep up with her reading habit. This bookshop is perfect for her because there are lots of books and they start at R10 a book.

So, when she had her 8th birthday party recently, we asked friends to bring a book to donate to Help a Rural Child. Then we took the donations (which included books and allsorts – people happily cleared their cupboards) to the shop in Mowbray, where they sort, donate and sell, with proceeds going to the project.
